The constellation Sagittarius is sometimes said to be a centaur, sometimes a satyr, but always an archer. Ever since a pup, I've identified with archers - Legolas was always my favorite from Lord of the Rings. The archer is a symbol of far-sightedness, precision, and protection.

Most my friends know I'm not huge into Western astrology, but I do find something poetic about reading your destiny in the night sky. Looking up at the constellations, you can imagine cosmic dramas playing out. The moon, though constantly waxing and waning, is a steady nighttime companion and a shining source warmth in the darkness.

In Chinese mythology, Hou Yi (后羿) was an archer who fell in love with the moon goddess, Chang'e. Originally, there were 10 suns, and when they all came out at once, the Earth was scorching. The Jade Emperor ordered Hou Yi to shoot down the suns to restore balance to the world. After Hou Yi shot down 9, he left one to continue to provide light to Earth's inhabitants. As a reward, the Jade Emperor gave Hou Yi an elixir of immortality.

There are two main versions of what happens next. The first is that Hou Yi's wife, Chang'e, steals the potion to achieve eternal youth and ascends to the heavens as the moon goddess. The other version states that Hou Yi declares himself king and becomes a tyrannical ruler, so Chang'e steals the potion and drinks it herself to prevent him from becoming an immortal dictator. Either way, Chang'e and Hou Yi are separated forever, only to be united on the mid-Autumn Festival.

Both Hou Yi and Chang'e famously appear in the 2020 film Over the Moon.

Born in the year of the dawg, I was bred in a generation of dawgs. 2 years later, in the year of the rat, I was visiting a relative's house with my family. As my parents were talking, I remember looking at my aunt's great big white dawg sitting nearby. At that age, that dawg must've been nearly my size or bigger than me. The next thing I remember was my parents washing out a deep wound on my face, next to my eye. Apparently the dawg, out of nowhere, snapped and bit me in the face, knocking me down. I have no idea what could have set him off in that moment, but strangely I don't feel scared of dawgs or even feel resentment toward that dawg in particular. If anything, the scar reminds me of who I am. After all, these dawgs are my peers. Call it my origin story. --it's WangDawg.

Many of y'all know me by my birth name, Chris, short for Christopher. My given name comes from St. Christopher, the patron saint of travellers.

As the story goes, St. Christopher used to live by a river and help travellers cross. One day, a child approached him and asked for help across. When they got to the other side, he found out the child was actually Christ. That's how he got his name Christopher ("Christ-bearer") and why he is revered as a guide/protector of children.

There is another reason why St. Christopher represents travellers. He was a supposedly a giant from the land of Canaan, or a Canaanite. When his story travelled to the Eastern Orthodox Church, Cananeus (Canaanite) was mistranslated as canineus (canine), so they began depicting him as a dawg-headed man.

At the time, dawgs symbolized foreigners and barbarians (travellers) -- one story about the origin of the term "barbarian" is that Romans described foreigners' languages as sounding like barking: "bar bar bar...." But as domesticated animals, dawgs exist within the middle ground of civilization and wilderness, just as St. Christopher is a mix between human and wild beast, seen as either a giant or a dawg-headed man.

I consider myself a traveller, having lived in the South, the East Coast, and the American West, as well as in the global West (U.S.) and "the East" (China). I, too, exist in the periphery, an outsider in my own land, as a mixed person belonging to both cultures and neither.

I am the sum of all my elements, the product of my influences, everything that came before me -- it's WangDawg, the Traveller.

1-5, which came out best? Little stamp I made out 1-5, which came out best?

Little stamp I made out of a linocut. First time carving/etching any kind of print. I've always loved the look of woodblock prints so I definitely wanna return to it.

I had to reverse most the images cause I didn't realize it would come out backwards once you print... whoops lesson learned (you can see how they really turned out in slide 6)

Big thanks to @gryzhng for showing me how to carve, lending me his tools, providing the ink, and being an overall awesome human 🎨🛠🛹💯
